Message from the Rector
Dear friends who wish to marry in our church,
at Sant’Anselmo on the Aventine, the Benedictine monastic community welcomes you and prays every day for those who, in front of the altar of our basilica, pronounce their “yes” to join in the sacrament of marriage. We pray for you because we are aware that the most important thing in life and the most beautiful in this world is love. As Rector of this basilica I would like to tell you how much we monks esteem your decision and how close we are to you in our prayer. The doors of our church and our hearts are always open. You can come when you want to renew your love and ask for a blessing from the Lord and, on the other hand, we also receive the blessing from God through your love. Therefore, thank you from my heart and from the other fathers who live at Sant’Anselmo.

Rules for Celebrating Marriages
In the church of Sant’Anselmo, three weddings are celebrated per day: at 11:00, 15:00 and 17:00.
Please note that matters relating to marriage are handled personally by the rector of the church with the engaged couples. Therefore, absolutely distrust anyone who contacts you in our name. The only person who can provide information relating to marriages is the rector of the church.
As per the provisions of the Vicariate of Rome, reservations cannot be made more than one year in advance. Therefore, requests for the following year always begin on the first working day of the month either online or during the office hours listed on this site. Please note that your initial contact online is a request, not a reservation. When you make your request online, the rector will send you an email to arrange an appointment. At least one of the engaged couples must appear in person to make the reservation.
After meeting the rector, the engaged couple must present themselves to their parish priest to inform him of their intention to marry and ask for the certificate of acknowledgement (downloadable from this website). Within a week of booking the reservation, the engaged couple must present this certificate to the rector, otherwise the reservation will be cancelled, so as to be able to offer others the possibility of choosing that date.
The collection of documents (baptism and confirmation certificates), the pre-Cana course, and other administrative procedures to fulfill the marriage requirements must be carried out at the parish from which the couple obtained the certificate of acknowledgement. The parish priest will give the engaged couple Form X to take to the civil registrar, where the date of the civil promise is recorded and publicly declared in the civil publications. The parish priest will take care of the proceedings related to the canonical publications.
The couple must obtain the “nulla osta” and Form XIV from the diocese to which they belong. The engaged couple then must deliver this to the rector of Sant’Anselmo at least one month before the celebration. On this occasion the engaged couple also deliver the Witness Sheet.
In the spaces of our church (square, avenue and cloister) it is forbidden to use confetti cannons, rockets, firecrackers and mortars.
