To celebrate the Solemnity of the Transitus of Saint Benedict, the Sant’Anselmo community was pleased to welcome S.E. Cardinal Angelo De Donatis to preside over the Mass and to join us for our festive lunch.
Cardinal De Donatis serves as Cardinal Vicar (Vicar General of His Holiness), Archpriest of the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Lateran University.
Abbot Primate Gregory Polan OSB welcomed Cardinal De Donatis at the opening of the Mass: “Cardinal De Donatis, we are very pleased to have you with us on the occasion of this celebration so important for the Benedictines. And we thank you for your precious work as Vicar General of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome and for the whole Church.”
Also in attendance were Dr. Bernhard Kotsch, German ambassador to the Holy See; The Most Reverend Father Jos Wouters, abbot general of the Premonstratensian Canons Regular; Reverend Father Thomas Bailey, pro-rector of the Pontifical Greek College; The Reverend Father Benoît Malvaux, SJ, attorney general of the Society of Jesus and confessor of Collegio Sant’Anselmo; Commander Lieutenant Dr. Sebastiano Luca d’Aleo of the Carabinieri Command of the Aventine Station and his colleague; and Dr. Roberto Lomolino, coordinator of the Oblates of Sant’Anselmo.
The community of Sant’Anselmo would like to thank Cardinal De Donatis and all of our esteemed guests for making our celebration worthy of the memory of our Patron, Saint Benedict.

On 14 September 2024, Abbot Jeremias Schröder OSB, of St. Ottilien Archabbey in Eresing, Germany, was elected abbot primate of the Benedictine Confederation at the Congress of Abbots meeting in Rome. He is the 11th abbot primate to be elected. Story and photos here.
